Siskins

Wed Feb 11, 2009, 6:40 AM
Today there was another finch explosion in the yard. While not as many as we had earlier in winter its still impressive. There's about 140 Goldfinches, 50 Pine Siskins and 4 Common Redpolls. The highlight today was a single Green Morph Siskin, not the most striking individual but distinctly more yellow than the regular siskins. Theres been numerous reports this winter of Green Morphs so I was hoping one would show up.

NH Pelagic Trip

Tue Feb 10, 2009, 11:13 AM
This Sunday there may be a Pelagic Trip out of Portsmouth. The obvious birds I'm hoping to see are either Murre species, Fulmars, Dovekies, Kittiwakes and Puffins. The only reasons it won't go are weather and a lack of people... of course I'm pretty confident we can get the 15 people needed to go, and the weather looks great this weekend. I'd love to have some alcid and Fulmar photographs to share but who knows. A lot of birds may be far from the boat and the tiny little Dovekie isn't the easiest bird to photograph.

Northern Hawk Owl

Tue Jan 13, 2009, 3:33 PM
No luck with the Glacous-winged on Monday but we did find an adult Thayer's gull and were able to get up to Center Harbor to see the first New Hampshire Hawk Owl of the year. We knew there had to be some in the state it was great to finally find one.
